Installing, maintaining and administering SQL Server and Sybase servers and developing, managing and supporting automated processes to facilitate health-checking, ETL and Disaster
Recovery processes.
Key Achievements
Built and implemented a GUI Perl tool to automate code releases. Using Perl/Tk to integrate between multiple source control systems (PVCS, VSS & TFS) via an Excel orchestration file, this tool took code from the source control repository, validated it against the details given in the release change request, and generated an automated release sequence.. The tool took advantage of the individual source control system APIs and the Perl/Tk and Win32 modules and used client connectivity tools for database interaction
After gathering requirements from the Change Management team and the teams that regularly took part in code releases, I designed the tool to be flexible and extendible
Previously there were errors in manually processing changes into and out of the source control systems and in the implementation of the changes. The application has had a significant impact on the reliability of the release process, the auditing of changes applied and the speed of code release
This tool was adopted by the US parent company because of its reliability, speed and success
Designed, developed and implemented a suite of database coding standards for the system development teams to improve the standard of SQL being developed and to reduce risks in code release
With the review and support of the development teams, these standards were rolled out to increase the standard and maintainability of SQL code, to improve the predictability
and reliability of code releases, to improve code performance and to allow auditing and reporting of changes
Coaching colleagues in the use of Perl & SQL
My day to day role included advising and coaching colleagues in matters relating to Perl and SQL, from syntax to overall design. Acted as the database design sign-off for data projects and performed optimisation reviews to improve the performance and stability of the code

Server systems for insurance quotation and administration systems
Key Achievements
Technical lead in the project to build the first web-based quotation system developed by the company. Used BizTalk, C# web services, XML & XSLT to generate quotes in a low latency system
Involved in the conception and design of a system to integrate with insurance quote web portals using XML messaging linking to existing back office systems. Previously there were seven separate quotation systems within the company, each of which had to be amended when rates changed or statutory changes were made. The online quotes solution reduced this to 2 systems (the other being a backup system to make available to any brokers without web access), vastly reducing the time taken to make changes to existing products and to bring new products to market
During this project I was responsible for the analysis of existing quotes systems and requirements and the design for mapping these requirements into an industry standard
XML format (ORIGO). This role lead to my leading the development work stream for creating the web services and devising new methods to generate quotation documents using XSL-FO
This system has become the foundation of the entire eBusiness platform of the company and has lead to the UK subsidiary being used as the centre of excellence for the corporation in all matters eBusiness related. I was very proud to be chosen for the company recognition event for my role in the project
Took initiative to create a new application to apply rate changes to the database
The existing process for adding new premium rates to the database was labour intensive and long-winded, being report based and key-man dependent. In order to allow a project to meet its deadline, I designed a mechanism for producing the rate sets in an Excel workbook, using ranges in the sheets to create the metadata for the rates in the database. I created a VB6 application to take this Excel workbook and use it to populate a database directly
This new application reduced the time taken to implement the rate changes from 1-2 days to 10 minutes and gave the project a head start
